Tea Roses – Tips To Help You Make The Best Choice

  • Posted on May 31, 2008 at 9:24 pm

When many people think of rose beauty, they think of tea roses. They usually come with fragrant large blooms that are simply elegant, vibrant in color, and with velvet petals. If you want to add tea roses to your rose garden, you’ll probably be overwhelmed with all the different varieties to choose from. In fact, there are actually hundreds of tea roses to choose from. You’ll find them in various colors, sizes, and shapes. So, here are a few tips that will help make your choice a bit simpler for you as you pick the perfect tea rose for your garden.

Tip #1 – Make Sure it Will Do Well in Your Climate – One of the most important things to keep in mind when picking out tea roses is to make sure the one you pick will do well in the climate that you live in. If you live in an area that is quite warm, make sure that your tea rose can stand the heat. Live in a humid area? Then make sure the tea rose can resist various fungal diseases. Also, make sure that your rose is hardy during the cold as well.

Tip #2 – Read the Labels – Usually you’ll find that the tea roses come with a description or label. Even if you look at it and love it, make sure that you read the label information on it. The last thing you want is a rose that won’t thrive well for you, so read it first, even if you love it right away.

Tip #3 – Do You Want Fragrance – Are you looking for a tea rose that has a nice fragrance or do they cause you to sneeze and have a runny nose? There are some tear roses that smell wonderful and others that barely smell at all. Decide whether or not you really want a rose that has fragrance and this will help you make your choice.

Tip #4 – Know the Growth Habits – Make sure that you are aware of the growth habits of the tea rose when making your choice as well. Does it spread out, climb, ramble, or does it do well as a ground cover. Think about where you want to plant it in your garden and in what direction you want it to grow. Also, know how high it will grown and how wide. You don’t want to plant a rose that ends up too big for the location you have for it.

Tip #5 – Is it Disease Resistant? – You’ll find that every tea rose can get disease, but there are some that are more disease resistant than other ones. If you don’t want to deal with diseases, make sure that you go with tea roses that are known as disease resistant

Tip #6 – Consider the Care – You’ll also need to think about the amount of care that you can give your tea roses as well. There are some tea roses that take more attention than others do in order to survive. If you don’t think you have plenty of time to give a certain tea rose the amount of attention that it will need, then consider going with one that only needs minimal attention from time to time.

Tip #7 – Are You Going to Produce Cut Flowers – It is important that you consider whether or not you want to use your tea roses to produce cut flowers. There are some types of tea roses that are better for cutting and displaying, but others can be quite fragile if they are cut.

Tip #8 – Go with Healthy Plants – If you go out to a nursery to pick out your tea roses, make sure you pick out ones that look healthy. Look for plants that have three canes that look strong. Also, avoid going with ones that have branches that are damages, roots that are brown, or foliage that is shriveled. Make sure the roots are b right white and that they have buds on the stems as well.

Tip #9 – Take Color into Consideration – You’ll also want to consider the different colors available as well. Think about how different colors will go with the rest of your rose garden. Think about how the tea rose in full bloom will go with the rest of the flowers and the area around it as well.

Tip #10 – Reputable Companies – When purchasing your tea roses, you should make sure that you only purchase them from reputable companies. You don’t want to try to save money by buying from cheap companies. The last thing you need is a sick plant, especially since disease can spread, so make sure you get it from a great company.

Building Sheds Could Be Easy – Especially With This Before Build Tutorial

  • Posted on May 29, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Building sheds could be a daunting task, and one which you might like to pass on to a professional. However, this is also a task, which if you could successfully accomplish, is certain to present a lasting impression for all. Therefore, before you buy your shed and shed building materials, devote some time to this guide and be equipped with pertinent information needed before you start on the construction of your shed.

Chart out your requirements

If building a shed is one of the jobs on your to do list, chances are that like other tasks, there is a specific requirement for accomplishing it. So before you start, precisely define the need. It could be for, say, storing agricultural yield, or maybe for simple household storage. Whatever your shed will be used for, the purpose definition would logically help work out the desired size of the shed. The second required component at this stage would be the available space. So with these two sides of the equation available, it should be possible to zero down on the practically possible shed size. However, before moving forward, do check the construction limits. Also while finalising on this aspect, visualise the constructed shed (of the worked out size) in proportion with the backyard and ask yourself some fundamental questions, such as: will the shed look right in the garden; is the door opening wide enough, in the correct place; how many windows, if any, do you need?

The look and appeal

If sheds are more than a junk repository for you, this aspect is definitely serious. There are a number of options in the sheds types and you have the authority to select, so why settle with the basic. For instance, the choice could be a beautiful wooden shed. Though in the long run it would require protection and maintenance, wooden sheds look natural and they tend to blend in with the rest of the garden. However if maintenance seems too bothering a clause, try the metal sheds. They are solid and resistant provided they are made from galvanized steel. Other options in this category include plastic sheds and vinyl sided sheds.

For the base of the shed, paving slabs could suffice or maybe you could fix in a concrete floor. Treated timber bearers are also an option in this category. Concrete blocks are the most economical and easiest to build. Moreover, the construction would be stable.

Other aspects that deserve attention include accessibility, shed placement, natural light availability, power, water and other basic requirements should be considered for your shed. Placement should be such that the shed does not render an awkward look to the adjoining house or construction, and careful space utilisation is pertinent as well.

Let’s plan

With the two basic aspects worked out, planning assumes priority. A shed plan can be purchased, referred to from books, or could be self designed. The last option could be difficult, especially if you are an amateur in this field. A suggestion therefore is to move with a readymade plan, already tested and tried.

Check the codes

Local building codes and ordinances must be closely checked before starting on the construction of your shed. Some sheds, like other structures, require the requisite permits, in absence of which they could be considered illegal. The ordinances could include: clauses relevant to the total space that can be occupied; construction time restrictions, etc. Approval might take weeks, and with some Housing Associations there are various rules and regulations that need to be addressed before a shed can be erected. There is more to building sheds then meets the eye, but now that you have been forewarned, you are now forearmed.

How Sunflower Oil Is Made And Used

  • Posted on May 29, 2008 at 1:51 am

Sunflower seed are widely regarded as one of nature’s most potent all-in-one sources for a variety of nutrients that the body needs and is used for a wide range of health purposes with heart disease and strengthening the immune system topping the list. Is sunflower seed oil any different?

The answer is, thankfully, no! Sunflower oil retains many of the health benefits of sunflower seeds despite the pressing needed to withdraw the oil from the kernel. Sunflower oil is extremely healthy and is perfect for kitchen use due to its clean (neutral) taste (as opposed to olive oils, which has an over empowering taste that does not sit well with all dishes) and high smoke point.

There are generally two types of sunflower oil – those with a high percentage of linoleic acid and those with a high percentage oleic acid. These differ in the amount of unsaturated fats that they contain. According to the Sunflower Society, linoleic has 11% saturated fats (the bad trans fats) whereas the premium high oleic sunflower oil has just 9%.

Linoleic sunflower oil is the natural oil and the most seen/used by the end user today. However, high oleic sunflower oil is becoming more popular due to the fact that the patent for this oil has recently expired and more farmers are starting to produce this variety. It has the advantage of a higher level of monounsaturated fats which have a more pronounced impact on lowering cholesterol than its polyunsaturated cousin.

However, high oleic is still at a premium due to the fact that polyunsaturated oils are prone to oxidation during commercial usage – most notably frying. This puts most of the crop out of reach for end users, though it is available to those willing to pay a premium for the health benefits.

The majority of sunflower oil is refined industrially and warm-pressed. Cold pressing sunflower oil is becoming more prominent and is labeled “Extra Virgin”, the same as the label for premium olive oil. Cold pressed sunflower oil is considered to have a better taste than that of the refined variant, while also keeping more of its nutrients and having a higher level of monounsaturated fats.

Sunflower oil, as well as being extremely healthy, is also versatile. It is commonly used in cosmetic formulations due to its high Vitamin E level and emollient (moisturizing) properties. Most oils benefit the skin by retaining moisture, but sunflower oil is special in that it can also leave a protective layer on the skin that resists infection.
New research has shown that pre-term infants, who are more susceptible to skin disease due to under development of the skin, can benefit from the use of sunflower oil – applied directly.

The third use is as a biofuel. Though not widely used until recently, high oil prices and President Bush’s announcement to have 9% of American cars running on biofuels have spurred research into using sunflower oil as an alternative to other oils.

Biodiesel can generally be made from any vegetable oil, though it is wise to refine it and de-wax it beforehand. The problem with using sunflower oil as a biodiesel alternative is that it is priced at a premium relative to soybean and canola oils due to the demand from the food processing industry. This makes it somewhat prohibitive to be considered on a larger scale.

However, the interest that industry has shown is due to sunflower seeds producing a much higher yield of oil per acre of planted crop than the soybean and thus making it more economical, though there are still various manufacturing challenges, although this is less difficult than the price barrier.

Looking at everything that sunflower seeds are being used for and the applications still to arise from current research inspires wonder and awe – from such an unlikely source, such wealth. Imagine that it was not given any attention when taken from the America’s to the Old World. It just shows that first impressions aren’t always right – particularly in the plant kingdom.

Table Lamps Are One Of The Most Important Things In The Room Decor

  • Posted on May 28, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Table lamps, especially in recent times are one of the most important things in the room décor. Because of its nature, it is usually the item to make the first impact on any guest. The first glance might not linger for more than a few seconds, but the impression that it makes on the beholder lasts longer. A nice table lamp can change the entire aura of a room.

Every room has a different requirement, and the right table lamp helps you create the right environment. A room intended to be peaceful might attain the effect through a specially chosen table lamp. Or, you might have a game room where you want your guests to admire your memorabilia. As a result you would want the lights to be such that they shine especially on those items. A perfect table lamp would easily achieve the desired effect for you.

So, while purchasing table lamps, do keep the following points in mind -

• The range of contemporary table lamps is absolutely mind-boggling. They come in all forms and vary from tall to short, from a softer glow to harsher light. Because the range is big, there is a great amount of malleability in your choice. The choice would, obviously depend on many factors including the place the lamp would be used, the nature of the user, the mood you would like to create etc.

• Take into account the intended user of the lamp. Think about whether it is only you, or whether it would be needed by other people as well. Moreover, you have to make sure that the lamp does the work you have bought it for. Of course merely looking good isn’t enough, functionality also matter. So, you might want a stronger light for your reading lamp and a softer lamp for that cozy environment you want to create in your living room. Similarly, an inconspicuous lamp with lots of light might be the perfect choice for your working place.

• Think about the place the lamp would grace. A large room with bare walls is unsuitable for a tiny lamp. If you want a small lamp, a top of a bookshelf is probably what you are looking for.

• Think hard before purchasing. Unique and distinct lamps might look very good in the shop, but when you bring it home, the weirdness might make it unwelcome. Remember that the lamp will be something you will use daily for many days to come. Choose something which appeals to you, something that will look interesting without going too over the top.

• Also look over the building material of the lamp. Certain stuff lasts longer than others. Moreover, certain material might look different in the shop light than in your home or office.

Uniqueness shouldn’t be your only factor while choosing a great table lamp. Don’t forget that you will be using this thing for many days. So choosing something that is pleasantly functional seems to be an intelligent decision. Also, if you are taking it for home use, make sure your family checks it out before purchase. Just keep the above-mentioned points in mind and don’t go hurtling towards rash decisions. Inquire thoroughly if you feel like it and think about what you are looking for, beforehand. These are the best methods of getting yourself that perfect contemporary table lamp.

Add Lighting Fixtures And Add Details

  • Posted on May 28, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Many times a home might just not seem like a home until you’ve got those perfect details that you have always dreamed about. Some of the details are easy to add, like sofa pillows in the right shade, or curtains that complete the look of the home. But did you know that not having the right lighting fixtures can actually hurt the look of your home? It is true, so you want to be sure that you are adding just the right ones so that you can have that perfect room.

First of all, you need to think about the room that you have and the lights that are currently there. For instance, if you have a baby’s room, is there a big and bright florescent bulb in the ceiling? Is this really the type of lighting fixture that is the best for that room? Usually, the only places where florescent bulbs really work are work spaces such as kitchens or garages. For any other room you are going to want to tone it down and get a light fixture that actually meshes with the rest of the room.

The best way to find that perfect light fixture for your room is to first think about the room and what you’d like it to portray. Do you want it to be a room that is warmly lit and solemn, or would you like it to be a room that has more of an exciting or bright flair? All of these things are important for you to think about as you are searching for those perfect lamps or wall hangings. You want to think about the style of the room first.

Next, you want to think about the type of light that you are going to need. For instance, do you need lights that you can work by, such as in a kitchen? Do you need lighting fixtures that are bright enough to read by, like in a den or another area? And do you need lights that will accent certain things, like hanging art or specific areas of the room? These are all questions that you are going to want to answer as you begin to shop for lights. If you need bright lights for a work space, you are going to want ceiling mounted lights, and yes, they might even be florescent. If you need reading lights, you want to stick with lamps, but you want to make sure that they are bright enough to read by, yet not too bright. If you want to accent things like art or various areas, you can always go with track lighting because that way you can manually focus each bulb to the exact place you’d like it.

If you first figure out what type of room you’ve got to light, and then think about which type of lighting will work best in that room, you will be able to find the perfect lamps or light fixtures for your every need, and you will be able to install them in your home.

Deciding Upon Lighting Fixtures

  • Posted on May 28, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Decorating your home and setting it up so that it becomes more of a home and less of a house is always a challenging thing. There are many important things for you to consider, and one of them is always going to be deciding upon the right lighting fixtures for each and every room. It doesn’t do to simply go with the lights that are already in the room, especially if all you have to work with are round overhead lights. Each room looks the same in this type of lighting, and you want to figure out a way to have each room truly become the room that it is meant to be. Your lighting fixtures, although you might not know it yet, can play a huge role in determining the type of room you’ve got, and how successful it might be.

First of all, you want to think about the various types of light that are put out by other fixtures. A top light that is simply a bulb with an encasement often puts out harsh light that floods the entire room. A long florescent light is going to do the same thing, but the light will be more focused. Sconces provide a much softer light and can be used on walls to accent different areas of the room. Track lighting is often used in order to accent walls or pieces of art, or simply areas of the room. You might also want to consider installing any of these types of lighting fixtures, and then providing them with dimmer switches so that you can control the brightness of the lights at all times, no matter what type of light you might have.

Another thing to focus on is the accent lighting that you will always need. These are the lamps that you’ll have around the room. For instance, is there an area where people might sit to enjoy a book or magazine? If so, this will be an area where you will need lamps. Tall corner lamps are also good ideas because they will accent the corner, make the room look bigger, and also make the room look more put together. You also might want small desk lamps that will provide you with concentrated light in one small area. Remember, too that lighting like that provided by sconces and other fixtures might do nothing but provide you with soothing and calming light, and even though this doesn’t seem like much it will actually help to provide your entire room with personality.

Lighting fixtures are more than just ways of getting light into the room. They are important parts of the room because they are like any other detail you might have – curtains or furniture or knick-knacks. It is important to find the perfect fixtures for each room of the house, so that you will be able to have each room be independent, functioning, and also full of life and personality. Your lighting fixtures can help you do this, but you’ve got to be the one who decides upon them.

Let It Rot: Five Guidelines For Composting

  • Posted on May 26, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Compost is what is left over when organic matter decomposes. Organic matter can be things like vegetable scraps, leaves, mown grass and any other garden waste. This material will decompose without any assistance at all, though you can help it along and enjoy the benefits of compost faster if you wish.

Because it doesn’t contain a high level of essential nutrients, compost is not considered an actual fertilizer. Instead, it is treated as a soil conditioner or amendment. Compost does supply many good things to the soil. It attracts beneficial creatures like earthworms and it improves the soil composition.

Cold composting is basically just making a pile and letting it sit in the bin. This takes longer than hot composting. Hot composting is when you take a shovel and turn your pile every few days to supply more oxygen to the microorganisms in your compost pile.

Location

First, decide where you will put your compost pile. Check for city ordinances that may regulate where you can put a compost pile, or if you can even have one. A compost pile can get messy, so put it somewhere that you can reach with a hose so you can do clean up if necessary. Bugs will be attracted to your compost pile, so keep this in mind. If you have a free corner in your garden that is far enough away from the house and the neighbors could be the perfect spot for that new compost pile.

Containers

There are many composting products for sale today. They even have gadgets that will rotate your compost for you, but really, the only thing you need is a compost container. Some people simply fence off the compost pile, while others use a bin or container of some kind to put their organic matter in. This can be recycled, home made or purchased at a store. While there are many composting bins to choose from in all sorts of shapes and sizes, the easiest ones are simple. Don’t spend more than you need.

Layer It

A good way to begin a compost pile is with layers. Start with fallen leaves or grass clippings, and then put some soil on it, then put in some kitchen waste. Eggshells, scraps of fruits and vegetables and coffee grounds all make good additions to a compost pile. Do not ever add meat or pet waste to your compost. Once you have more layers, add another layer of soil and manure.

Moisture

Keep your compost pile moist, but not wet. Add a little water if it seems to be getting dry. You may want to consider adding a little beer to your pile. The yeast in the beer will keep the bacteria in your compost pile and make sure they’ll be happy. It doesn’t really matter if you add beer or water, just keep it moist.

Maintenance

A compost pile doesn’t need a lot of maintenance. Just continue adding your garden trimmings and kitchen waste to the pile. Occasionally mix in a little soil and manure to encourage decomposition. Keep the pile moist and if you remember, turn the pile about once a week to improve air circulation and aid the decomposition process.

The compost is ready to put in your garden when it looks like dark soil and smells like earth. Just add to your garden and mix it in. If you want to add compost to your indoor plants, you need to sterilize it first. Layer it on some foil on an old baking sheet and put it in a 200 degree F oven for about half an hour.

There isn’t one best way to make compost. No matter what you do, organic matter will decompose. Find the style that works best for you and your garden and get composting!

Propagation, When Is The Best Time To Do It?

  • Posted on May 26, 2008 at 8:43 pm

If you are a beginner at rose gardening you have probably heard the phrase rose propagation and you are quite sure what it is and how to do it. Propagation is a term used to describe reproduction in the plant world. You can propagate you roses by using seeds or taking a cutting from your existing rose plant.

There is a long and rich history to Rose propagation. Not much has changed as far as the terms used in Rose propagation since the early 19th century. This is when American settlers rose stems with them into the West. Some may even remember their mothers or grandmothers taking a rose stem and putting it in the ground with a plastic jar over top to make it grow.

The use of a cutting from a rose plant is the most common method of rose propagation. They main people who use seeds in rose propagation are commercial growers and horticulturalists. By using a seed you are never guaranteed that you will get the exact replica of the original rose bush. It is possible that the pollen that was used to fertilize the seeds may not be completely pure, you may actually come out with a mix of different plants.

Using a cutting from an existing bush it is guaranteed that you will get an exact replica of the bush you took it from. Rose propagation is really quite simple. All you need to do is ensure that you give the new cuttings a safe, moist and humid environment so the roots have time to develop. It is natural for any part of the plant to try to establish its own root system so it can stay alive, but it is only through your help that this can happen at all.

The best time to propagate your roses is in the spring when the weather is still cool and the plants are alive and particularly vigorous. When you are selecting the perfect cutting it is best to choose one that is young, the younger ones seem to grow easier and better than the older ones. You should also choose a shoot that does not have a bud on it yet and cut off about six inches off the top. You will want to cut off the leaves at the bottom of the shoot but leave the ones at the top.

The leaves will be able to help provide the food and nutrients while the roots are still establishing themselves. Next you need to clear an area of the garden; it needs to be free of dead leaves and weeds. Before planting your cutting, put a notch in the end of it and dip it into some compost to encourage root growth. Then plant the shoot a few inches into the ground and it is best to be put in a place you want your new rose bush to go so you do not have to transplant it later.

Next you will want to water your shoot and then cover it with either plastic or glass. This will create a green house effect. In other words it will keep the air inside the plastic or class at a higher temperature and moist. You will want the cutting to be exposed to sun light but not too much because you do not want it to overheat. You can plant your shoot in partial shade to avoid direct sun light and keep it from overheating.

You need to check the shoot often to be sure it is staying moist enough. If the ground feels a bit dry you will need to water it. The glass or plastic can be removed if the temperature reaches above 75 degrees but then put it back on come nightfall when the temperatures are likely to drop below 75 degrees. You should not be looking for results right away, the shoot may look like a stick in the ground for a while but what really matters is what is happening in the ground.

If your first shoot does not turn out like expected do not get discouraged, try again. Many first time or inexperienced growers have a little difficulty propagating for the first time. Even though the success rate for new cuttings is low you can improve your odds by planting more than one shoot. If by some chance they all sprout roots and grow, you can always transplant or give them to other gardeners you know.

Rose Bushes – The Basics Of Planting Your Own Rose Bush

  • Posted on May 26, 2008 at 8:36 pm

For many years, lovers have given roses and poets have written of their merits. Now, you may be considering showing how much you love roses by planting your own rose bushes. No doubt you’ve heard a lot about how to take care of roses – the diseases to watch out for and the ways to prune them. While it may sound pretty complicated, you’ll find that planting your own rose bush is much easier than you think. If you take the following guidelines into consideration and use them, you’ll be sure to do a great job and have a beautiful rose bush that will look wonderful.

Things to Do Before Planting Your Rose Bush

If you are waiting for spring to arrive so you can plant your rose bush, there are some things that you may want to do. You may want to start thinking about the types of bushes you want for your rose garden. There are hundreds of different rose bushes that you can choose from and it may be a bit difficult to make your choice. You may want to visit a nursery in your area to find out more about bushes. Also, look for friends and neighbors that have beautiful bushes and find out what types of bushes they are growing. Make sure that you know whether a certain bush is prone to disease or if it takes a lot of attention as well before making your choice.

Of course once you know what bush you want for your garden, then you’ll need to come up with a great location for it as well. Make sure you come up with a good location before you even buy your rose bush. You need to be sure that your bush will get plenty of light each day and you should make sure that the soil drains well and that it is quite fertile.

When to Plant a Rose Bush

Usually if you are planting a rose bush that is bare root, you will want to plant it late in the winter. However, if you purchase a rose bush that has already been grown in a planter, you’ll want to plant it during the spring. Just make sure that you don’t plant roses during the summer months. While it is possible, it can be very hard on the new plant because of the hot weather.

Preparation for Planting Your Rose Bush

Now that you know what location you’re going to plant the rose in, you need to get the bed ready. Make sure that you dig a hole that is going to be at least two times the size of the container holding your rose bush. Remember, the bush has a very large root system. If you make sure that your hole is large, it will be easier for the rose bush to put down it’s roots.

When you dig out the soil, make sure to put it in a bucket or wheelbarrow. Then mix compost and topsoil with the soil and put part of the mixture into the hole. In some cases you may want to add phosphate fertilizer in the hole as well.

When you are dealing with a bare root rose bush, you’ll want to soak it for awhile before you plant it. Once you have soaked the bush for at least a couple hours, you’ll want to cut off the root tips with pruning shears, and then you’ll be ready to plant the bush.

Planting the Bush

There are many bushes that will come along with planting instructions. Usually you’ll want to put a mound at the bottom of the hole you have and then you put the bare root rose bush over this mound, making sure the roots are smoothly placed over it. If your roots curve up or they spread out in a flat manner, then you may not have to use the mound. Then you can start filling the hole back in; however, once you have it about 2/3 full with soil, make sure to water it. Once you have let the hole drain, then fill it again with water and then add the rest of the soil to the hole.

Caring for Your Rose Bush

Usually you’ll need to give your new rose bush about an inch of water each week, but this can depend on the climate you are living in. Make sure that you recognize when your rose is in distress. If you notice that the leaves are drooping, you’ll need to add some water. However, if the leaves are falling off and turning yellow, you may be giving them too much water.
